How to get licensed

  1. Apply to DOPL for a credential such as E200 General Electrical Contractor, E201 Residential Electrical Contractor or Master Electrician.
  2. Utah Business and Law Exam for the E200 or E201 contractor license; the company also needs a Master Electrician qualifier, who holds the individual license. source
  3. Experience: contractor level: two years (at least 4,000 hours) of paid construction experience, as for all general classifications including E200 and E201; the Master Electrician qualifier separately needs, for example, four years as a journeyman. source
  4. Post a no standard bond for every applicant; DOPL may require a bond before issuing the license, under Utah Code 58-55-306 and rule R156-55a-602. source
  5. Carry general liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 per incident and $2,000,000 in total, with DOPL as certificate holder (minimums in effect from April 20, 2026); workers compensation coverage or a Labor Commission waiver is also required. source
  6. Pay the application fee per classification (general electrical contractor), plus $50 per qualifier and a $1 surcharge: $175. source
