Licenses by State

How many licensed contractors are in each state

Edited by John Voll. Last verified .

We counted active contractor licenses and registrations by trade in 16 states, straight from 29 official state license files and open datasets, as of October 6, 2026. Each count names the dataset it came from. We publish counts only, never names, addresses or license numbers. States define their credentials differently, so read what each row counts before comparing.

Key findings

Download the data

One row per state, trade and holder type: the active count, the rate per 100,000 residents, the dataset, its link, data license and as-of date. Counts only, no personal data.

Download CSV

The CSV leaves out Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia because their data sources state no reuse terms; their counts are still on this page and on each state page.

Free to reuse with credit to Licenses by State and to each source publisher named in the file. Rows from Open Database License sources stay under that license, and the notices below travel with the data.

Rankings per 100,000 residents

Each ranking compares only rows that count the same kind of holder for the same trade, and needs at least 3 states. Rates divide the active count by the state's resident population estimate for July 1, 2025 from the U.S. Census Bureau. Rows covering part of a state, repeating another trade's records, or counting a business license or a bond instead of a trade credential are left out.

States we do not cover yet

We surveyed all 50 states for official bulk license data. 34 have no counts here yet, for these reasons (from our survey of October 6, 2026). Their state pages still link each board's official license lookup.

The publisher offers a free file, but it sits behind a bot wall or a search form that needs a browser step, so we have not pulled it yet.
Alaska, Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee
We found no complete statewide data file: only an order form, a PDF roster for one trade, or a list we could not confirm.
Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota
The state sells its license list, or gives away only part of it.
Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Nevada, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Wisconsin
The data is available only through a public records request, or we found no bulk file at all.
Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Wyoming
The publisher forbids reuse of its roster, or puts the download behind a CAPTCHA.
Louisiana, Missouri

Methodology

We use a state's data only where its publisher offers a bulk download or open data feed. A record counts as active by the publisher's own status, or, where a file has no status column, when its expiration date is on or after the snapshot date. Trades are matched to license types by the names the board uses, and the license types behind each count are listed in the CSV. Some states license businesses, some license individual tradespeople, and some do both; we label every row by holder and never add business and individual rows together. A license can carry several trades, so trade counts within a state can overlap. Rows with very few records are left out.

Per-capita rates use the Census Bureau's resident population estimates for July 1, 2025, read from its own state totals file. These are counts of credentials on file, not of people or companies at work: one contractor can hold several credentials, and a credential on file does not mean the holder is working in the state. For any single contractor, the board's own lookup is the record that counts. More detail is on our methodology page.
